The Spieghelstraat Apartments in Alkmaar, a project of Woonwaard housing association, exemplify the future of sustainable construction. Designed by Kraaijvanger Architects, the development includes 44 energy-efficient apartments that align with nearly zero-energy building (BENG) standards.
A standout feature of this project is the extensive use of reclaimed wood. Around 750 m² of Western Red Cedar façade boards, originally harvested in Belgium, were revitalized and optimized by CirQ Wood before being sustainably treated with Burnblock® fire retardant. This circular approach extends the lifecycle of the wood, preserving the 10,646 kg of CO2 sequestered within it for decades to come while contributing to the building’s stunning aesthetic.
Durable Fire Safety for Circular Materials
To ensure compliance with strict fire safety standards, Lemahieu Fire Protection applied a CE-certified fire-retardant treatment using Burnblock®. This treatment achieved the required B-s2,d0 fire classification while maintaining the wood’s natural beauty. As a natural solution, Burnblock® supports the project’s environmental goals without compromising safety.
The apartment complex’s sustainability extends beyond materials. It is disconnected from the gas network and instead relies on the HVC heating network, the Netherlands’ most sustainable heating system. Solar panels provide additional energy, reinforcing the project’s commitment to energy neutrality.
