In Lisbjerg, near Aarhus, the Aarhus Nord fire station was built between 2020 and 2021, covering 1,120 sqm. Located in a newly developed urban area, it ensures rapid emergency response across the northern part of Aarhus Municipality.
Designing an iconic fire station is a unique challenge. The team combined technical expertise with sustainable design, resulting in striking architecture that features charred wood facades.
The facade uses thermally modified pine from Lunawood, planed into profiles of varying widths. The wood was treated with Burnblock fire retardant by our trusted Partner, Bergsten Timber, and finished with Burntwood‘s charring process. This treatment not only enhances fire resistance but also provides a durable blackened surface that contrasts beautifully with the characteristic red elements of the fire station.
The building stands out with its bold black-and-red color scheme, perfectly complementing the fire trucks. A charred, fire-retardant facade is a fitting and sustainable choice for a fire station.
