Maritime center, Esbjerg, Denmark

Introducing “Lanternen,” a maritime landmark in Esbjerg proudly brought to life through a collaboration between Burnblock, Keflico, Werk Arkitekter, and Snøhetta. This stunning structure, designed by Werk Arkitekter and Snøhetta, stands proudly along the waterfront, illuminated by the North Sea. Its graceful oval shape, clad in thermo-treated pine and Louro Gamela terrace boards, pays homage to Esbjerg’s maritime heritage. With stringent coastal demands in mind, the facade features a combination of thermo-treated pine and tropical hardwood, all treated with Burnblock® technology for enhanced fire resistance, achieving a Bs1,d0 fire rating.

Lanternen’s exceptional design has garnered international acclaim, including the prestigious MIPIM Award for Best Cultural, Sports & Education Project in 2024. This follows its victories at the Danish Wood Awards, IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Prize, and Building Awards in 2023. These accolades highlight Lanternen’s innovative architecture and its ability to withstand the harsh coastal environment while providing an inviting space for community engagement. It’s not just a building; it’s a symbol of resilience, creativity, and community spirit.
