Orsett Heath Academy, Grays, United Kingdom

Orsett Heath Academy in Essex stands as a testament to modern educational infrastructure, combining innovative design with stringent safety standards. Constructed by McAvoy, the three-storey, 8,610 m² facility was delivered ahead of schedule, featuring modular construction techniques that allowed for efficient assembly and minimized on-site disruptions.

A critical aspect of the academy’s design was the incorporation of fire-retardant timber cladding to meet the UK’s stringent fire safety regulations. WJ Group’s FireWright® team treated 4,065 linear metres of Thermo-Ayous timber using Burnblock®, a 100% natural and biodegradable fire retardant. This treatment achieved the required Euroclass B-s2,d0 classification, ensuring the cladding’s compliance with EN 14915 standards. The clear, transparent nature of the treatment preserved the timber’s aesthetic qualities while providing long-lasting fire protection.

The treated timber was supplied by Vincent Timber, who coordinated with WJ Group to ensure timely delivery and installation. This collaboration exemplifies the seamless integration of sustainable materials and fire safety in contemporary educational architecture.
